St. Petersburg B&Bs: Five of the best
The bed and breakfast market in St. Petersburg remains a very mixed bag, with properties ranging from some of the most highly recommended lodging in the city to appallingly amateur ventures demanding money for little more than the use of someone's grotty spare rooms. In selecting our best St. Petersburg bed and breakfasts, we have looked for establishments that offer a combination of good-quality, stylishly fitted accommodation and personal interaction with friendly and helpful owners or staff.

Opened in 2003, the Assembly B&B is cozy and lived-in, and owes its popularity to the sterling reputation it has built up with travellers in over a decade in business. Managed by German expats, this well-established bed and breakfast has won praise from guests from all over the world. Four spacious and attractively decorated rooms, all with twin beds and three with fold-out sofas to add one or two more sleeping spaces, are served by two large bathrooms. There's also a large and well equipped kitchen, and the staff are friendly and helpful, though more fluent in English than German. The location, in a slightly scruffy area of the historic centre not far from Moscow Railway Station. is a short bus-ride from St. Petersburg's top visitor attractions.

It calls itself a hostel, but this stylish converted apartment on beautiful Galernaya Ulitsa, close to the historic New Holland shipyards and the Mariinsky Theatre, has more the atmosphere of a B&B, with all rooms designed to accommodate families or groups of friends. Bedding arrangements in rooms are flexible, however, and prices are very reasonable, so individual travelers can also enjoy the spacious and attractive accommodation. The kitchen is superbly equipped for self-catering, and bathroom facilities are extensive. Excellent for families, but best if you speak at least a few words of Russian.

Swiss-owned, but mostly managed by Russian staff, this functional and attractive bed and breakfast next to the Fontanka River is reasonably convenient location-wise and has some very inexpensive rooms with shared bathroom facilities. Rooms with en suite bathrooms are only a little more expensive, and all accommodation is plainly and simply decorated with pale color schemes and IKEA furnishings. The large and elegant communal kitchen is run on self-service principals, but the owners keep the fridge stocked with basic groceries, and there are several supermarkets nearby.
