Stations and Other Transport Buildings
As anyone who has travelled on the Moscow or St. Petersburg metros can testify, Russia's transport systems are distinguished by their unusually rich and grandiose architecture and design. Moreover, this was not merely a peculiarity of the Soviet system, the railway stations built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries also have the appearance more of palaces than mere transport terminals.
St. Petersburg's most famous railway station, dating from the mid 19th century, Moscow Station dominates Ploshchad Vosstaniya in the very centre of the city and almost exactly mirrors its sister building, Leningrad Station in Moscow.
Probably the most beautiful railway station in St. Petersburg, this Art Nouveau masterpiece has survived almost unaltered and is also the site of the first railway journey in Russia, made between St. Petersburg and Tsarskoye Selo in 1837.
