Although it's a little off the beaten track for most visitors and won't be in contention for any interior design awards, this popular Chinese restaurant a few minutes' walk from the eastern end of Nevsky Prospekt is well worth seeking out, especially for those who want a filling meal on a tight budget.
In its rather murky main dining room, Kitay-Gorod offers excellent value, spicy Chinese cuisine authentic enough to be perennially popular with Chinese tour-groups. Portions are definitely for sharing and the Szechuan-style dishes are particularly recommended. On the extensive menu, which is in both Russian and English, the twice-cooked pork and beef with ginger and green onion are stand-outs. Complimentary green tea is served to all guests on arrival, and the restaurant usually has a reasonable choice of bottled Harbin beers.
