The most important thing to know about the Golden Garden is that it's nothing like as fancy as you'd think from the entrance and the flashy cars outside. The hotel itself is maximum 4-star and really quite plain. That said, it isn't that expensive either, and the rooms were clean and comfortable. The Italian restaurant, on the other hand, was pricey but worth every penny - one of the best I've been to outside Italy.

Quality at reasonable price in the city centre

I noticed that this place is somewhat underpublicized – you often cannot find it in guide books. Perhaps that is because they are an independent hotel and not part of any chain of hotels. We found the hotel very reasonably priced for the service they provide and a very central location. Planning a longer than average stay we had price as a big concern. The standards at the hotel are very good: the staff is attentive and room service was rather quick. My husband and I had a Business Room – as we wanted more space for our extended visit – and that was exactly what we got. All rooms face the courtyard and thus are very tranquil. The room was big and we had a spacious bathroom. My husband was in the city on business so he used the writing desk and the Wi-Fi connection quite extensively… The hotel is of very reasonable size and the vestibule is never crowded, so I drank tea in the lounge on a few occasions which was nice. Breakfast room is a bit big for the size of the hotel, but breakfast buffet was very varied and tasty. We ate at their Italian restaurant and were generally quite satisfied. Our local hosts arranged all the sightseeing for us, but when we wanted to walk, the Nevskij Prospekt was right around the corner…
