Nevsky Prospekt, St. Petersburg's main street, runs past the end of Ulitsa Marata, just 2 minutes' walk from the hotel. Although Ulitsa Marata is far from St. Petersburg's quietest street, it is still far less busy during rush-hours than Nevsky Prospekt. From here it is a short walk or ride on public transport to St. Petersburg's major sights. The Helvetia Hotel is surrounded by buildings that typify classical St. Petersburg.St. Petersburg's main station, Moscow Station, is just a 3-minute car ride from the Helvetia Hotel, while other stations - Finland, Vitebsk, Ladoga, and Baltic - are less than half an hour away. Pulkovo, St. Petersburg's airport, are an hour's taxi ride away. The nearest metro station is Mayakovskaya, on the corner of Nevsky Prospekt and Ulitsa Marata, just a couple of minutes' walk away.
Local Sightseeing
The Museum of the Arctic and Antarctic is 5 minutes' walk from the Helvetia Hotel along Ulitsa Marata. This is the only museum of its type in Russia and one of major polar museums in the world. It is home to 75,000 items dating from the 16th century to the present day.Also just a few minutes' walk away is the Fyodor Dostoevsky Memorial Museum. Dostoevsky set the action in many of his novels in this area of St. Petersburg, and the memorial museum is housed in the apartment in which the great writer used to live.
Ploshchad Vosstaniya, just 10 minutes' walk from the hotel, is home to a monument to Leningrad the "hero city" - the highest Soviet state award given to cities for heroism and courage during the Second World War. In Leningrad's case, this was for surviving the almost 3-year Blockade by the Nazis.
