Nice stay for the money.
Apparently this hotel was once a private mansion and was converted into a 3-star hotel about a decade ago. It is in a charming area - on the bank of a canal - and close to the Mariinsky Theatre, the Conservatoire (with its own private opera house) and within a short walk to a very characterful 19th century local sinagogue. We walked to the Mariinsky and once again to a nice Russian restaurant opposite the Mariinsky, and I had a private tour of the Hermitage, so that we had a ride rather than walked. The hotel is nice if you do not expect it to be palatial and my rooom was renovated. They spoke some English. Breakfast was of solid quality, but not very varried (I would have addedd fresh fruit if I were there chef). We had free Wi-Fi so I could use my IPhone. Having English-language TV would be a plus (for an occasional rainy evening), but that's something we could easily live without. All in all, we had a nice stay for the money...
