Local Sightseeing
The Alexander Nevskiy Monastery, located just across the river from the hotel, is named in honor of one of the city's patron saints, the defender of the Russian lands in the 13th century. Founded by Peter the Great in 1713, it contains an Orthodox seminary, the splendid Troitsky Cathedral and two memorial cemeteries where several famous people are buried, including Dostoevsky, Glinka, Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky. The blue-and-white towers of the Smolniy Cathedral are one of the greatest masterpices of Francesco-Bartolomeo Rastrelli, the city's most celebrated baroque architect. The cathedral was mostly built between 1748 and 1764, but not actually finished until 1835, hence the more austere neo-classical interior. Nowadays, the Smolniy Cathedral is used mostly as a concert hall and site for temporary exhibitions.
