The Astoria certainly isn't cheap, and some of the interiors are showing their age a little. But what can you expect from one of the city's most historic hotels? This place has real character, and the buffet breakfast was out of this world. The location's great for sightseeing, but it's a fair walk to the metro.

Very elegant hotel in a gorgeous area...
I visited St. Petersburg with my husband last year and we stayed at the Astoria. This is clearly a beautiful historic hotel and I liked it very much. The staff was very attentive, service was prompt and buffet breakfast was a treat (we had breakfast included in our room rate and now I know what we paid for). The room was nice and comfortable, but the decor looked very pale. It was intentionally understated, with the use of natural fabrics and light wood parquet floors. It did not look luxurious, but was very elegant. The room was carefully thought through and provided all the comforts we needed, including air-conditioning and a very nice bathroom… We ate at the hotel on one of the evenings and I found their food quite good, but very expensive…
I had a chronic health issue during the stay, and because I made so many special requests, I eventually became quite friendly with the guest relations manager (?). She was a seasoned travel professional who really helped us cut a few corners and even treated my husband and I to a cup of tea at the Rotunda on one of the mornings. That was very sweet! We hired an excellent guide – this time not through the hotel – and were able to see the beautiful city. Time was very short: I definitely want to come back but not sure if I'd be able to do so…
