Kronverkskaya Curtain Wall and Gate
Part of the stone fortifications erected under the supervision of Domenico Trezzini 1708-1709, the Kronverkskaya Curtain Wall faces north-east, and its gate once led to the wardroom of the Peter and Paul Fortress. The premises inside the curtain wall housed the barracks for various companies of the garrison regiment and, in 1826, were used for the pre-trial detention of the leaders of the Decembrist Uprising - Pavel Pestel, Kondraty Ryleev, Sergey Muravev-Apostol, Pyotr Khakovsky, and Mikhail Bestuzhev-Ryumin, all of whom were subsequently hanged.
