Produkty is the Russian word for "groceries", and the majority of independent grocery stores in St. Petersburg continue the Soviet tradition of using the word instead of a name to identify their storefronts. While from the outside this shop on the corner of Ulitsa Nekrasova and Ulitsa Mayakovskogo is indistinguishable from the hundreds of other identically titled outlets throughout the city, inside it boasts not only rather elegant traditional interiors, but also a selection of cured meats and cheeses that places it in the higher ranks of gourmet food stores in the city centre.

Also on offer are high-quality fruit and vegetables, an above-average selection of wines and spirits, and "semi-prepared" products such as pelmeni (Russian meat dumplings) from the kitchens of the excellent nearby restaurant Piter. It may take long-term acquaintance with the mediocrity of most Russian grocery stores to fully appreciate it, but this little Produkty really is a hidden gem.
