Among St. Petersburg's newest museums, this fabulous exhibition of jewels and artifacts boasts the single largest collection of the famous Fabergé Imperial easter eggs among a wealth of extraordinary works of Russian fine and applied art from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Opened in the Shuvalov Palace next to the Fontanka River in 2013, the Fabergé Museum was established to display the collections of the Link of Times foundation, an organization established by billionaire Viktor Vekselberg to repatriate objects of great cultural significance lost to Russia after the October Revolution. The focal point of the collection is unquestionably the nine Imperial easter eggs created between 1885 and 1917 under the supervision of court jeweler Peter Carl Fabergé, including the very first of these unique gifts (the Hen Egg), but there is much more besides to explore, with a veritable wealth of items formerly owned by the Imperial household such as icons, jeweled trinkets, exotic tableware and much more.
The Fabergé Museum is open to the general public for an hour every evening, and at all other times is only accessible with a guide, so booking tours is by far the most convenient way to visit the museum. Moreover, your guide will be able to provide you with much greater information about the former owners (and creators) of the museum's remarkable treasures, greatly enhancing your understanding and enjoyment of the collection.
