A trip to Moscow from St. Petersburg is made even more attractive by the fact that Russia's two main cities are so very different in character. While St. Petersburg is a city of the Age of Empire that celebrates its European heritage, Moscow can boast over 1000 years of Russian history and culture, as well as being one of the great global metropolises of the 21st century. This two-day tour is the perfect opportunity to experience the striking contrasts between the two cities, and to get a basic overview of Moscow's most popular and spectacular attractions, including Red Square and the Kremlin.

Itinerary

Day 1
After 11:00pm Train to Moscow
To allow for maximum time during the day in Moscow, you will travel from St. Petersburg on an overnight train. Unless otherwise requested, tickets will be in standard four-bed compartments. The price of this tour includes a transfer from your hotel or other pick-up location in central St. Petersburg to Moscow Railway Station.
Around 8:00am Arrival in Moscow and transfer to hotel
Upon arrival in Moscow, you will be met by your guide and driver and transferred to your hotel for check-in and breakfast.
10:00am – 1:00pm City bus tour
This introductory bus tour will give your group an overview of the main sights of central Moscow, including Red Square, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, and the Novodevichy Convent. The tour also takes you out of the center to Moscow State University and the Sparrow Hills, where you can enjoy magnificent views over the city, and then on to Poklonnaya Gora, another vantage point overlooking the downtown and also the site of monuments commemorating victory in the Napoleonic Wars and the Second World War. Finally, the group will leave the bus to take a short ride on the Moscow Metro, viewing some of the most spectacular of the system's palatial station interiors.
1:00pm – 2:00pm Lunch
There will be a one-hour break in the tour for lunch at a convenient restaurant. Choice of restaurant can be arranged in advance or with your guide on arrival in Moscow.
2:30pm – 5:00pm Tretyakov Gallery
In the afternoon, your guide will take you to the State Tretyakov Gallery. The greatest repository of Russian art, this beautifully laid out museum offers a wealth of treasures from medieval icons to world-famous works by the first wave of the Russian avant-garde. As well as introducing you to hundreds of magnificent artworks, many of which are little-known outside Russia, the Tretyakov provides a great insight into the course of Russian history, with many paintings illustrating key historic events from throughout the ages.
5:30pm Return to hotel
At the end of the day, you will be returned to your Moscow hotel. If required, we can also arrange evening entertainment such as a visit to the Bolshoi Theatre or the Moscow State Circus.
Day 2
9:00am – 1:00pm Kremlin Tour
This comprehensive tour of the Moscow Kremlin takes in the citadel's three magnificent medieval cathedrals, the Patriarch's Palace and several other historic buildings, as well as the historic collections of the Armoury Chamber, which contain the jewels and other treasures of the Russian state. The most valuable items are kept in the Diamond Fund, which will be the final stop on the tour.
1:00pm – 2:00pm Lunch
There will be a break for a lunch at a suitable restaurant near the Kremlin and Red Square. Your guide will be able to provide recommendations, or if you prefer we can arrange dining for your group in advance.
2:00pm – 3:30pm Red Square and St. Basil's Cathedral
After lunch, your guide will take you to Red Square, Moscow's historic heart and one of the world's most famous public spaces. As well as viewing all the square's stunning and varied buildings, you will make an inside visit to probably the most celebrated among them, St. Basil's Cathedral, and the GUM shopping arcade, where there will be an opportunity to buy souvenirs of your visit to Moscow.
3:30pm – 4:30pm Ulitsa Varvarka and the Palace of the Romanov Boyars
Just south of Red Square, Ulitsa Varvarka is perhaps the best preserved street from Moscow's medieval period, with several unique buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries, including the charming Palace of the Romanov Boyars, with beautifully restored interiors that offer real insight into how noble families lived, as well as introducing visitors to the history of the Romanovs before they became Tsars.
5:00pm – 7:30pm Moscow River Cruise
This cruise on one of the Radisson Royal Hotel's luxurious riverboats takes guests along the Moskva River right through the centre of the city, providing a different perspective on Moscow's main sights. Dinner can be arranged on board if required, or you will have time to dine after the cruise and before your train to St. Petersburg.
7:30pm – 11:00pm Free time
After the river cruise, there will be a little over three hours of free time before you need to depart for your return train. Dinner or alternative entertainment can be arranged if required.
After 11:00pm Return train to St. Petersburg
