Italian walks through St. Petersburg
So much of St. Petersburg has Italian connections, first and foremost the wealth of palaces, public buildings, and sculpture created by Italian artists. There is no way that these walking routes could cover every work of Italian origin from the first two centuries of the city's development, but by taking in the numerous highlights they can provide a good impression of the sheer enormity of the Italian contribution to the vistas of St. Petersburg, and to other aspects of cultural life in the city.
This tour of the historic centre starts on Vasilevskiy Island with the works of Domenico Trezzini and takes in several masterpieces by the string of great Italian architects who worked in St. Petersburg, from Trezzini's Petrine Baroque to the high Empire style of Carlo Rossi.
Starting from the Alexander Nevsky Monastery, when several prominent Italians are buried, this walk through the city presents all aspects of Italians' historic contribution to St. Petersburg culture, in the fields of fine art, theatre, music and architecture.
