To better understand what to expect from St. Petersburg's 5-star hotels, you can find our opinion of each hotel with a five-star rating below. Alternatively, you can select from the luxury hotels in our own classification system to be sure that the property you choose fully conforms to international 5-star standards.
While Russia's star rating system for hotels differs considerably from its international counterparts, 5-star hotels in St. Petersburg for the most part give a good account of themselves in their ability to meet travelers' expectations for comfort and amenities. Quality within the 5-star class does vary considerably, however, and in some cases there's very little justification for this high accolade.

Taking pride of place among St. Petersburg's 5-star hotels thanks to its rich history and beautiful Art Nouveau interiors, the Grand Hotel Europe has been a byword for luxury in the city for well over a century. Located close to Moscow Railway Station, and thus a little further east along Nevsky Prospekt and a little further from the top sights and attractions than its main 5-star rivals, the Corinthia St. Petersburg is nonetheless a first-class luxury hotel, especially attractive to business travelers thanks to its state-of-the-art meeting and event facilities, as well as spacious guest rooms fitted in a simple but sumptuous contemporary style, and a full range of up-market leisure facilities. »»»

With its fun, vibrant interiors, excellent service efforts and superb location just round the corner from St. Isaac's Cathedral, the Domina Prestige Hotel has quickly established itself as among the best rated properties in St. Petersburg. One could quibble that the services and facilities don't quite fulfill the criteria for an international 5-star rating, but among its many attractions the Domina Prestige also boasts prices are generally ultra-competitive for the area.

Occupying a magnificent 19th century mansion next to St. Isaac's Cathedral (and designed by the same architect), St. Petersburg's Four Seasons was opened in 2013 with the clear aim of being the city's most exceptional and luxurious 5-star hotel. As well as supremely elegant, classically styled guest rooms and suites, the hotel boasts a four-floor Spa and fitness centre, sumptuous dining venues and meeting space, and of course a prime downtown location. »»»

A modern hotel with a less than ideal location about 15 minutes' walk from Moscow Railway Station, the Grand Hotel Emerald cannot claim the atmosphere or convenience of St. Petersburg's best 5-star hotels, but does offer a good standard of standard business and leisure facilities including a large fitness centre with spa and swimming pool, and high quality conferencing and meeting venues. Guest rooms are not the freshest in terms of design, but still very comfortable. »»»

Situated merely steps from Palace Square and the Hermitage on the exceptionally picturesque Moyka River Embankment, the Kempinski Moika 22 has only been open for a decade, but swiftly found a place among the best 5-star hotels in St. Petersburg thanks to the reliable quality of its exemplary service and care of guests. Offering a great location between Nevsky Prospekt and St. Isaac's Cathedral, this extremely popular property is housed in an attractive historic building and does well to simulate the atmosphere of a grand historic hotel, although only opened in the mid 2000s. However, while the Petro Palace is often excellent value and also does its best to provide a full complement of business and leisure facilities, claims to 5-star status are a little far-fetched. »»»

Housed in an elegant historic building on Nevsky Prospekt, St. Petersburg's Radisson Royal Hotel has never been in the same luxury league as its Moscow namesake. However, it is currently undergoing a major renovation which should see standards for service and amenities improve to international 5-star levels. Even before this, the hotel was reasonably popular for good-value superior accommodation and a fair range of services and facilities for business and leisure. »»»

Located opposite St. Isaac's Cathedral in elegant Art Nouveau premises, the Astoria Hotel has been a St. Petersburg landmark for over 100 years and, thanks to a long list of celebrities and world leaders among previous guests, remains probably the most famous of the city's 5-star hotels. While not as luxurious as some of its competitors, the Astoria boasts elegant and cozy interiors, celebrated fine dining, and a full range of superior business and leisure facilities. »»»

The flagship of the three hotels that Finnish chain Sokos operates in St. Petersburg, the Sokos Palace Bridge boasts an unusual and appealing location in the city's oldest neighborhood on Vasilevskiy Island - close to major visitor attractions but also very peaceful. A renovated 18th century palace on Nevsky Prospekt, close to the Hermitage, St. Isaac's Cathedral and other major visitor attractions, the Taleon Imperial has the history and location to rival St. Petersburg's top 5-star hotels. Among its standout features are a spectacular rooftop swimming pool and Spa, as well as stunning historic venues for dining and events. In terms of service and comfort, however, the hotel does not always fully comply to international five-star standards.

A boutique all-suite property on Vasilevskiy Island, the Trezzini Palace has many attractions but unquestionably lacks the facilities and amenities that international travelers would expect from a 5-star hotel. What is does offer is 21 spacious and elegant suites, many of them with fantastic views across the Neva River. Beyond a restaurant and access to a Spa complex on the other side of town, however, there are no facilities to speak of. The location, while very attractive, is also not particularly convenient for public transport or most sightseeing.
