While this renowned small hotel, housed in a converted 19th-century mansion, is not the most convenient for sightseeing or public transport, its location next to the Kryukov Canal among the most picturesque in St. Petersburg. The Alexander House's sterling reputation rests on its charming, individually designed guest rooms and the warm welcome extended to all guests by the staff. One advantage of the location is that the Mariinsky Theatre is only 10 minutes' walk away. »»»

Managed jointly with the neighboring Rocco Forte Astoria Hotel, and enjoying an equally illustrious and even longer history, the Angleterre Hotel also shares many of the Astoria's luxury facilities. The main difference between the two properties is that accommodation at the Angleterre is more modest in terms of size and style, but also somewhat cheaper, and also enjoying the same superb location a few steps from St. Isaac's Cathedral. »»»

Located opposite St. Petersburg's US Consulate, in one of the city's prettiest districts and very close to the metro, this small hotel offers eight spacious apartments in a tastefully renovated Art Nouveau building. The hotel lacks on-site facilities and standards of service can be variable, so four stars is a bit of a stretch, but the well equipped apartments, all with air-conditioning and full kitchen facilities, have a pleasant homely feel.

It is unlikely that many foreign visitors will find use for the Arealinn as it is located far out west in St. Petersburg's old docklands, with no metro station in walking distance. A modern hotel that certainly lives up to international 3-star - if not 4-star - standards, the Arealinn has 40 attractively fitted rooms and suites, as well as a reasonable in-house Italian restaurant. Other facilities are limited to conferencing venues, and the Arealinn would make a reasonable venue for events.

Boasting a fantastic downtown location in a courtyard next to the Moyka River, only five minutes' walk from St. Isaac's Cathedral and Nevsky Prospekt, the Arkadia Hotel is a small superior property with only 15 guest rooms. This cozy small hotel has a great central location just off Nevsky Prospekt, convenient for the metro and within comfortable walking distance of most major downtown attractions. This small hotel offers a fantastic downtown location on picturesque Bolshaya Konyushennaya Ulitsa, a short walk from Palace Square and a few steps from Nevsky Prospekt. Its 4-star rating is hard to justify, however, as there are no on-site facilities except a single event venue that is also used to serve buffet breakfast, and the hotel has no lift. The 34 guest rooms are all well equipped and quite elegantly fitted, but not above international 3-star standards.

Despite its peculiar name - an over literal translation of Bolshaya Morskaya, the historic street on which it stands - the Big Marine, opened in 2014, is a welcome addition to St. Petersburg's selection of small, superior hotels, with a prime downtown location a few steps from St. Isaac's Cathedral, 15 simply but attractively fitted guest rooms, and charming public spaces including a spectacular banqueting hall with original 19th century oak panelling and artwork.

Situated on a pretty side street about ten minutes' walk from St. Petersburg's main tourist area, with a great range of bars and restaurants just round the corner, this small independent hotel was opened in 2015. Successfully combining contemporary and traditional design elements, the 1852 Hotel has 31 guest rooms with crisp modern interiors and good in-room amenities. This fairly large hotel with a convenient downtown location next to Dostoevskaya metro station has long been popular with tour groups and travelers on a limited budget. Situated in the far north of St. Petersburg, among the lakes and beaches of the Ozerki district, this 107-room hotel has been open for a while, and some guest rooms are beginning to show their age. Due to the distance from the downtown (and from the metro), it's unlikely to appeal to most foreign visitors, but the K-Vizit does have extensive business and leisure facilities, including 25-meter pool and mini golf in the garden.
